“Toward a Standardized Developmental Staging Framework for Pediatric Artificial Intelligence”
Vol. 4 , Issue 2 (2026) · pp. 58-67
Abstract
Artificial intelligence systems are increasingly used by and applied to children, in clinical care and in general use. How these systems represent developmental stage determines whether evidence of their safety in one group transfers to another. This review aims to examine how developmental stage is currently represented across clinical, regulatory, and conversational applications of pediatric artificial intelligence, identifies gaps arising from those representations, and proposes requirements for a staging standard.
