Kazuo Ishiguro’s “The Remains of the Day” (1989) stands as one of the most celebrated novels of late-twentieth century British fiction. Set in post-war England, the novel explores the personal and moral dilemmas of Stevens, a butler who reflects upon his life of service to a once-prestigious English lord, Lord Darlington. Through a masterful first-person narrative, Ishiguro examines themes of memory, dignity, duty, repression, and national identity.
